The NFDI Overall Architecture Work Group, in collaboration with Base4NFDI, is pleased to invite you to its second workshop at the IT Center of RWTH Aachen University in Aachen!
Why Join the Workshop on a Common NFDI Architecture?
NFDI has built a rich and diverse landscape of data infrastructures. The next step is to connect these strengths so they can work together across disciplines and grow sustainably over time.
A shared NFDI architecture is not about centralisation or standardisation for its own sake. It is about making collaboration easier, reusing what already works, and creating clear pathways for future services to integrate smoothly. It helps ensure that today’s solutions remain usable, visible, and impactful tomorrow.
This workshop is your chance to actively shape a shared NFDI vision, building directly on the results and insights of the 1st OneNFDI Architecture Workshop (LINK here?). Together, we will:
· Identify Common Technical Components and Reusable Services to Improve Collaboration and Interoperability within the NFDI - share how data is stored, login systems, or tools like workflow platforms, and spot overlaps to improve collaboration.
· Validate the Overall Architecture diagram – check that the “big picture” fits real-world needs, e.g., how storage, compute, and services connect across consortia.
· Collaborate in breakout sessions on interoperability and cloud-readiness – explore scenarios such as a researcher creating data, storing it, and another reusing it across consortia.
· Refine shared processes and the OneNFDI guidebook – use the results from the previous activities to clarify expectations, define needed support from NFDI (guidance, coordination, invoicing), and shape a practical handbook for working together.
This Lunch-to-Lunch event is organized by Marius Politze and Philipp Wieder, in collaboration with Base4NFDI.
Target Group
This interactive, hands-on workshop is aimed at representatives from all NFDI consortia with a solid understanding of their consortium’s structure, architecture, and infrastructure. As the topics are relevant to the entire NFDI community, the workshop encourages exchange and collaboration across consortia.
Due to limited capacity, each consortium is invited to nominate one representative, ideally someone with a comprehensive architectural overview who can actively contribute to the discussions. In case of multiple registrations from the same consortium, we may contact the individuals to resolve this or decide on participation as needed.
A waiting list will be available once capacity is reached. If you are unsure who would be best suited to attend, please feel free to contact us for guidance.
Flash Talks & Presentation Guidelines
Participants who did not present their consortium’s architecture at the first workshop are invited to give a short flash talk. Please prepare 2–3 slides summarizing your architectural approach, including key aspects such as infrastructures and platforms, data flow and storage, protocols and standards, metadata management, and access and identity management.
Please use the provided template (copy or download from the folder) and upload your slides by 07.04.26 to this folder.
