Abstract of the abstract
Engineering sciences face challenges in their Research Data Management (RDM) regarding heterogeneity of data and formats, findability of decentralised data, comprehensiveness, and interoperability.
The sociotechnical Data Mesh approach from industrial data management appears promising to address these challenges in RDM. Relevance and applicability are investigated in a series of 40 semi-structured expert interviews. As a result, the design of the four Data Mesh principles (domain ownership, data products, self-serve platform, federated data governance) for RDM is presented. A quantitative assessment supplements the qualitative answers.
The results as a whole or individual aspects may be transferable to other disciplines as well as for Base Services, where technical and governance interoperability is required.
