Description
Freshwater biodiversity research produces diverse outputs, including spatial layers, maps, metadata,
biodiversity observations, project documentation and applied knowledge resources. Even where
repositories and portals are available, these outputs are often distributed across separate systems and
prepared for different audiences. This creates a practical research data management (RDM) challenge
relevant to Base4NFDI: how can freshwater biodiversity outputs be published in FAIR ways, linked
across services and made reusable for scientific, policy and planning communities?
This poster presents a user story from the Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries
(IGB). The workflow brings together complementary publication pathways: IGB GeoNode for geospatial
data and map-based outputs, FRED as IGB’s institutional research data repository, the Freshwater
Information Platform (FIP), based on the OPPLA information hub system, and FIPbio as the renewed
Freshwater Biodiversity Data Portal of FIP. FIPbio adds a freshwater-specific perspective by addressing
occurrence records, eDNA observations, remote sensing data and abiotic measurements, together with
metadata needs such as ecosystem and waterbody type, habitat characteristics, sampling methods,
life-cycle stages and hydrographic spatial context.
Rather than presenting a finished service, the contribution uses an applied IGB workflow to show where
practical guidance and basic services can support smaller research teams. Key needs include choosing
suitable publication pathways, documenting spatial ecological data, assigning licences, harmonising
metadata, using controlled vocabularies, linking repository records with geospatial layers and
translating project outputs into reusable knowledge resources.
The poster therefore contributes a freshwater biodiversity perspective to discussions on Base4NFDI,
community integration, repository interoperability and cross-cutting service needs for FAIR ecological
data.
