The stated goal of the Basic Service Identity and Access Management for NFDI (IAM4NFDI) is to enable researchers to seamlessly access all resources in a secure and unified way with the experience of Single Sign-On. One login to rule them all—right? Far from it!
Access management is an important aspect of IAM4NFDI. First and foremost, it means that only those users that are actually authorised may access a service. IAM4NFDI provides active support for four software solutions, so-called Community Authentication and Authorisation Infrastructures (CAAIs), which facilitate exactly that in a user-friendly way. CAAIs use attributes (descriptive elements of researchers’ digital identities) to provide services with information about users. These allow services to grant or prevent access where necessary.
Up to this point in the story, the focus has been on services—it’s time to shift our perspective and bring virtual organizations (VOs) into the picture. VOs are groups with specific attributes that communities can define and manage themselves, led by a so-called VO manager (a researcher, not IAM staff). The CAAI is the single place to manage VO members and their roles, so that they have appropriate access to several connected services. For example, a VO can consist of an entire consortium, include additional collaborating researchers beyond that, or encompass cross-consortium groups such as NFDI sections. What the members of these VOs have in common is that they wish to access the same services with the same needs. Ultimately, to realize the full potential of VOs, close collaboration between VO managers and service providers and answering of important questions is necessary.
