Description

The DMP4NFDI Basic Service supports NFDI consortia in developing and providing tailored services for data and software management planning and is currently in its integration phase. Through incubator projects with 17 consortia, as well as additional collaborations with non-NFDI service providers, we have supported these communities by providing RDMO hosting, developing templates, creating training materials and workshop concepts, and implementing community-specific plugins and integrations.

Data Management Plans (DMPs) and Software Management Plans (SMPs) are often the entry point for researchers into research data management when starting a new project. During project planning, they support the development of a comprehensive RDM strategy by addressing challenges, such as selecting metadata standards, covering often forgotten aspects, such as responsibilities or archiving, and providing information about existing services and materials that can make the creation and management of FAIR research data easier. For consortia and research institutions, providing DMP and SMP templates to their communities offers the opportunity to support the process and communicate relevant best practices and services when they are needed during the planning process and throughout the project.

RDMO’s flexibility allows the development of custom DMP and SMP templates, community-specific plugins, and integrations that address the diverse needs of NFDI consortia and their communities. This enables consortia to tailor RDMO to their specific disciplines while ensuring alignment with NFDI-wide standards. DMP4NFDI has created and maintains a common template framework that supports machine-actionable DMPs. This allows information about the project and its data management process, as described in the DMP, to be transferred into other services, turning the DMP into a communication hub between services and connecting planning with the actual data management workflows.

In this talk, we will highlight the added value of DMP4NFDI for the NFDI ecosystem, demonstrate how DMPs and SMPs can be connected with other services, and discuss how machine-actionable, interconnected DMPs support consortia and strengthen service integration.
