Description

Data Management Plans (DMPs) support research teams in making informed decisions about the generation, documentation, storage, sharing, preservation, and reuse of research data. However, generic templates often offer insufficient guidance for integrating these processes into discipline-specific research workflows.

In response to this challenge, FAIRmat introduced the FAIRmat Guide to Writing a Research Data Management Plan in 2023 [1], initially tailored to research in condensed-matter physics and materials science. In order to transform this static guidance into an interactive, and maintainable service, FAIRmat developed DMP4PS: an RDMO-based platform for creating and managing DMPs in the physical sciences. This development was realized through a six-month incubator project with DMP4NFDI, a Base4NFDI Basic Service.

During the incubator project, dedicated test and production environments were established for DMP4PS, with technical hosting provided by the University and State Library Darmstadt (ULB) at TU Darmstadt through DMP4NFDI. Two machine-actionable DMP templates were developed: one aligned with the requirements of DFG individual research grants, and another reflecting Horizon Europe guidelines. These templates incorporate structured questions, discipline-specific guidance, and user-friendly summary views. They support researchers and data stewards in developing and maintaining practical DMPs throughout their projects, while also addressing funder requirements. Additionally, FAIRmat created a dedicated entry page that brings together DMP4PS, practical guidance, supporting resources, and contact options [2].

DMP4PS is designed for extension beyond FAIRmat. Other physical sciences consortia and research communities can adapt existing components, contribute their own templates, and use the shared platform without establishing separate technical infrastructure.

This incubator project demonstrates how collaboration between a disciplinary consortium and a Basic Service can transform community knowledge into reusable infrastructure and provide researchers with practical, sustainable support for data management planning. This presentation will briefly outline the collaboration with DMP4NFDI, demonstrate the DMP4PS platform, and discuss its potential to foster collaborative and interoperable data management practices across research communities and institutions.
