Put Your Service to the Test: A hands-on introduction to the Service Readiness Level Framework
A service is more than its code. Whether it succeeds depends on adoption, training, governance, and the people who keep it running, not only on the technology. Yet these are exactly the things that are hardest to see, to plan for and to communicate to others. Making a service's real maturity visible, technical and non-technical alike, helps teams get a clear picture of where their service currently stands and what kind of support it actually needs to mature.
We will introduce the Service Readiness Level (SRL) framework, a nine-level scale based on evidence criteria rather than external review. It is designed as a self-assessment, allowing teams to evaluate the maturity of their service across technical, organisational, legal and social dimensions. The SRL framework is already being used within Base4NFDI, for example to inform support requests in the newly established Service Support Track (SST), and further application is planned across basic services. It is still work in progress, and this workshop is part of its development and the validation of its current version.
After a short introduction and example, participants will try out the framework on a service of their own, working individually or in small groups, to get a first sense of how the self-assessment works. At the end, we collect feedback to improve and validate the framework together.
The workshop is aimed at service providers and managers who want to self-assess their service, as well as CTOs and infrastructure leads from research-performing organisations. Attendance is not limited to NFDI services, and interested parties from beyond are very welcome. No prior knowledge is needed. Just bring a service you know well and an interest in making its development visible.
