Getting to MPA
By train
Trains to Munich usually stop at Munich central station (Hauptbahnhof) or Ostbahnhof. From there you can get to MPA via public transport:
1) take any S-Bahn to MARIENPLATZ (city center)
2) change to subway "U6" direction Garching-Forschungszentrum
3) get off at the end stop and exit the subway, direction "MPA, MPE, MPQ, ESO". It takes approx. 25 minutes from Marienplatz to Garching Forschungszentrum
By plane
The closest airport is Munich airport (MUC), located about 30 km north of Munich and about 15 km north of the Garching research area. From there you can get to MPA via:
Taxi: cabs are located just outside the terminals (ground level); costs are about 40-65€; duration depends on traffic and ranges from 15 to 30 minutes.
Public transport:
1) take S-Bahn S8 direction Nannhofen (Munich)
2) leave at third stop: "Ismaning"
3) take Bus no. 230 to Garching, Technische Universität (runs every 20-40 minutes most of the work day)
4) get off at the stop "Boltzmannstrasse", go straightforward and you'll see ESO (opposite of ESO is our MPA building)
On weekends / holidays / evening stay in the S-Bahn until downtown Marienplatz and then use the U-Bahn U6 (see description above).
By car
From any direction you come by car, you reach our institute best by the motorway Munich-Nürnberg (A 9)
1) leave at exit "Garching Nord",
2) follow signs "Forschungsinstitute"
3) after 200 m you'll cross the state route B11 to Garching. Drive straight on; there will be white road signs for Forschungsinstitute.
4) After another 500 m, the road turns left sharply, but you leave it by driving (slowly!) straight on.
5) There are two parking lots and the left one is always open for visitors. The first building you can see is ESO and opposite of ESO you'll find our MPA building.
Accommodation
Hotels on campus
There are two hotel on campus, Courtyard Munich Garching (webpage) and STELLARIS (webpage). These are the closest options within a 5-minute walking distance from MPA.
Hotels in Garching
Hotels in Garching are relatively close. They are generally within a 30-minute walking distance. Garching and the Technical University of Munich (TUM, where MPA is located) are directly connected by U6, separated by only one stop --Garching is the second last stop and Garching-Forschungszentrum (TUM campus) is the last stop. If you take the U6, it will take only less than five minutes (+5 waiting time) to reach the TUM campus from Garching, from which it takes 5 - 10 minutes to get to MPA on foot. Hotels at the Garching town center are, for example, Hotel Konig Ludwig II (webpage), Soulmade (webpage) or Hoyacker Hof (webpage).
Wi-fi connection
The widely used "eduroam" wifi network is available at the MPA. If you don't have access to "eduroam", please ask to any of the local organizers who will create a guest account through which you can connect to "mpa-guest".
Places to eat
On campus

IPP Kantine: many MPA locals have their lunches in the IPP Kantine” The easiest way to reach this cafeteria is to join MPA people planning their lunch.

Bäckerei & Konditorei Ludwig Riedmair: this is a small bakery shop close to the Garching- Forschungszentrum U-bahn station (Boltzmannstraße 11), a 5-minute walk from the MPA.

Can Sophia: a mobile street food take-away restaurant “Can Sophia” located at Boltzmannstraße 1, only a 1-minute walk from the MPA front door. However, it is only open until 2PM and the queuing times may be long.

Mensa Campus Garching: It is a student lunch cafeteria, located at Boltzmannstraße 19, about 10 minutes from the MPA, a few hundred meters north from the Garching-Forschungszentrum U-bahn station. Note that they may charge different prices for food, depending on whether you are a student, employee, or a guest.
In Garching
The Garching town center, one U-bahn station away, has some number of restaurants offering lunch as well as several coffee shops and bakeries.
