Justification. The COVID 19 pandemic spread besides a lethal virus another contagion that appears to be more long-lasting: the infodemic. Misinformation in form of fake news, conspiracy theories and a variety of deceptive information blew up, creating a crisis in the authorities’ credibility and at times in governance.
Hence, people asked where are the scientists? Some questioned their social engagement, various quizzed on their aptness, and many criticized their communication skills.
Proposal, goals and boundaries. My personal guerrilla against that was 2 min desde la Ciencia (2 min from Science, in Spanish). A regular publication on relevant societal issues from the viewpoint of a scientist, but written in an amenable manner aiming at a broader audience.
Its goals, (i) to contribute to scientific literacy, and (ii) to provoke reflection and critical thinking.
Its boundaries, (i) each piece does not claim academic authority -finally it is written by a dilettante-, and (ii) although the topics are broad, in their selection and treatment, a subtle bias towards Latin America exist.
The format. Each piece extends for about 500 words -therefore the name, an average person reads 250 words per minute-; it is written in Spanish and is uploaded biweekly to the website: https://www.danielcallo-concha.com/otros-other-stuff/2-min-desde-la-ciencia
Links to the column are posted in some social media platforms: Facebook, LinkedIn, and a couple of distribution lists in WhatsApp.
There is no copyright endorsed and columns can be freely reproduced by open media (what already happened few times), with the single requirement to credit my authorship.
Reaching. By now, April 2024, I have written 76 columns. Some have been reproduced in open media platforms and news portals in Latin America.
I do not expect a blasting readership, rather, a regular and progressive community (that once a while, protrude here and there). Ideally, the reader of 2min initiative expects insightfulness on the topic and reliability on the argumentation. What should regain confidence in science.
