The panel discussion intends to synthesize the experiences that have been obtained with long-term data collections for socio-economic research in developing and developed countries. The discussion will map out the standards that must be observed for high quality data and address various issues related to representativeness, panel longevity, data exchange and comparability across different panels, and possibilities for the combination of panel data with external data bases, technical advances in data collection, data confidentially as well as data protection requirements, as well as related topics.
