Dr. Erin Tranfield is head of the Electron Microscopy Facility at the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência in Portugal. In September 2017 Erin took a break from a long string of conferences and athletic training to go horse back riding with friends. What was supposed to be a fun morning, followed by lunch and a relaxing evening at home turned into a 6 month hospital stay and an ongoing journey to redefine herself as an athlete, a scientist and even a person. 5 years after her accident she was announced as the winner of the 2023 RMS Alan Agar Award for Electron Microscopy. It has been a journey from unbelievable lows to recent victories and in this talk Erin will share her experiences.
Erin will talk about what has helped her walk these steps and where she struggled. Her story is one that proves that despite insurmountable odds, amazing things are possible.
The event will consist of a talk (from 12-1PM) and another hour (1-2PM) of free discussion, where participants can ask questions and discuss.
The talk is part of GADIS (Gender and Diversity in Science), a joint initiative by the Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing, CECAD and the SFB 1451. You can read more about GADIS here: https://www.cecad.uni-koeln.de/career/diversity/gadis
