DESCRIPTION:On behalf of Prof. Dr. Ralf Michaels\, in cooperation with Jus
tin Monsenepwo Mwakwaye (Université de Montréal)\, we cordially invite y
ou on Monday\, 29 November 2021 at 2 pm (CET) to a virtual workshop i
n our new series on “Private International Law in Africa”. \n\nJules
Masuku will be speaking in French on the topic “Contribution of Supranat
ional Courts to the Integration Process in Africa: The Case of the CCJA”
 .\n\nAbout the speaker:\n\nJules Masuku Ayikaba holds a bachelor’s degre
e in law from the University of Kinshasa and an LL.M. in European Law from
the University of Würzburg\, where he is currently a doctoral student un
der the supervision of Prof. Dr. Feichtner and a lecturer in business law
in Africa. His research interests focus on competition law\, international
trade law and legal integration in Africa from a comparative perspective.
\n\nAbout the topic:\n\nSignificant strides toward integration have been
made at both regional and continental levels in Africa. Many African polic
ymakers see integration as a winning proposition for their countries that
improves trade\, increases market size\, strengthens political and economi
c institutions\, enhances export competitiveness\, and improves efficiency
gains. The creation of the Organization for the Harmonization of Business
Law in Africa (OHADA) and the establishment of its powerful judicial inst
itution\, the Common Court of Justice and Arbitration (CCJA) aim at contri
buting to “the establishment of an African economic community” (Preamb
le of the OHADA Treaty). Notwithstanding its weaknesses\, the CCJA seems t
o contribute considerably to the integration process in western and centra
l Africa\, in contrast to other supranational courts in Africa. With the e
stablishment of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCTA)\, the CCJA
could play a more important role in the integration process in Africa in
the future. Hence\, it is crucial to define the relation between OHADA (an
d the CCJA) and the AfCTA.\n\nAbout the new virtual workshop series:\n\nTh
ere is a growing interest in the study of private international law in Afr
ica. In an environment of growing international transactions in both civil
and commercial matters\, private international law can play a significant
role in Africa in addressing issues such as globalization\, regional econ
omic integration\, immigration\, etc. The series intends to discuss new sc
holarly work on private international law in Africa and advance solutions
on how the current framework of that field can be improved on the continen
t.\n\nThe virtual workshop will be held as a video conference via Zoom. Pl
ease confirm upon registration that you agree to the use of Zoom and that
you will not record the event. By attending the event you confirm that you
